But just like the more popular destinations such as Britain, France, and Spain, the country of Greece can make for a great travel destination, and it’s just enough off the beaten path that you’ll end up seeing and doing things that most people will never have the chance to experience.Ancient ruins like the Parthenon dot the landscape of Athens, and are very impressive when viewed in person. Other landmarks include Kallimarmaro Stadium, which is the site of the first Olympics, in 1896. A replica of the ancient Athens Stadium, it is made wholly of white marble from Mount Penteli, also in Greece. The Parthenon was constructed of this material, as well. Syntagma Square is in the center of Athens, and is close by the former Royal Palace, which is the site of the Greek Parliament. Many top-notch hotels are situated on this square, and it also holds many of the famous ancient monuments of the city. Naturally, tourists tend to flock to this location. Athens has many classical museums as well, including the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, and the Byzantine Museum, among others. Thanks to the 2004 Olympics, most of the museums in the city were renovated, making for a nicer experience while viewing the many ancient artifacts and works art on display. In addition, the Athens Planetarium is a short distance away, and is reputed to be one of the best of its kind in the world. To get to Greece, cheap flights to Athens are readily available from many cities in Europe, including Zurich, Switzerland; Madrid, Spain; Rome, Italy; and even London and Birmingham, UK. Some of the cheapest flights to Greece are from Amsterdam, on either Alitalia, or Swiss International Air Lines. Farther away, cheap flights to Greece from places such as Russia, Bodrum, Mumbai, or Toronto are harder to find, but are available if one searches and does enough research. Often, vacation packages are available while could drive the price down on these flights.
