Flights CyprusCyprus, situated off the coast of Greece and south of Turkey, is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It was a British colony until 1960, when it gained its independence from the UK. The next four years were fraught with violence, and the United Nations established a peacekeeping force in the country in 1964, which managed to quell the hostilities for a while. However, 1974 saw a coup which originated in Athens, Greece, that attempted to overthrow the legitimate government of Cyprus at the time. As a result, Turkey invaded the island and displaced thousands of Cypriots, carving out an area to the north for themselves they called the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. This division is recognized only by Turkey, and the dispute rages on, despite numerous efforts by the UN to resolve the crisis. Many tourists take flights to Lanarca Airport, as it is the largest airport in Cyprus and is especially popular for tourists going to the resort of Ayia Napa, about 46 kilometers from the airport. There are around 30 international airlines using the airport at present, one of which is Cyprus Airlines. Cheap flights to Lanarca can be booked on a variety of airlines throughout Europe and beyond, with cheap air flights to Cyprus from the UK and Ireland being especially popular. Direct flights from Belfast to Cyprus are not available, but British Airways has a flight that makes one stop in Manchester first, before traveling on to Paphos, which is the other main airport in Cyprus. Conversely, cheap air flights to Paphos in Cyprus from Cardiff, Wales do not exist, as travelers have to fly into Lanarca. So, it pays to check both airports in Cyprus to see which flights are the best from your chosen point of origin, especially if flights from your city to one of the airports aren’t available. So, despite the troubling political situation, travel to Cyprus is readily available, whether it is to one airport or the other. It may not be as inexpensive as other destinations around Europe, but one can guarantee that a trip to Cypress would be an adventure like no other.
