Flight InstrumentsWhen a pilot is flying a plane and he is making decisions in the cockpit, steering the plane to where it should go, he is doing this primarily with the use of his aircraft flight instruments. And before one can fly during inclement weather, he must be instrument rated, which means that the pilot must have had training in how to fly a plane using just the instruments, without any visibility. This is crucial in case bad weather such as dense fog rolls in while the plane is in flight.Flight instruments on aircraft have traditionally been a series of analog gauges and levers, with needles and dials to display data to the pilot, while allowing him to control various aspects of the steering mechanism such as the flaps. One such gauge is the altimeter, which gives the aircraft’s height in feet or meters, above sea level. It does this by taking an air pressure reading, and can calculate the altitude based on the reading combined with the local barometric pressure. The airspeed indicator is another gauge that comes in handy, and it tells the pilot how fast the plane is flying relative to the surrounding air. There are many factors that affect this reading, such as altitude, temperature, humidity, and wind conditions, so this instrument has a tough job. These days, many aircraft come equipped with electronic flight instruments with computers to calculate data, although many of the original gauges are still present in modern day aircraft. There are many schools around the country that provide instrument flight training and instruction, in places like California, Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), and other places with a temperate climate that is conducive to many decent flying days each year. These schools teach their students all about instrument flight procedures, and how to perform instrument flight maneuvers in the case of having to fly using instruments along. Often, these training schools will also offer accelerated flight instrument training (AFIT) for an additional fee. And if you own a plane, you might want to check out some of the online auction sites, which offer small aircraft flight instruments for sale. There are some great deals on used equipment online, if you know were to look.
